How carpet is installed and who installs it can significantly impact project completion
time, long-term performance, total aesthetics and product warranties. Complaints
about carpet can often be traced to the quality of the installation. A complete
understanding of the process will help you make the most informed decisions.
Carpet installation involves attention to the following details:
- Take off of physical measurements from the Architectural Plans to
determine carpet layout, seam direction, and preparation of a floor plan
for the installer
- Project management
- Confirmation and pre-inspection of actual site measurements; in addition to conducting
ASTM calcium chloride moisture testing of each floor (required on new construction)
- Estimation of required floor preparation
- Locating storage for carpet off site, coordination of delivery and unloading on site
- Determining that the carpet materials received are in fact first quality and installable
- Assuring that proper installation methods are followed including that proper
adhesives and seam sealers are used in accordance with manufacturer's installation requirements
- Coordination of carpet installation with other trades working in space
For remodel spaces the following must also be addressed:
- Removal of existing flooring
- Identifying incompatible adhesives, identifying VAT (asbestos containing tile)
from VCT (vinyl composition tile)
- Identifying signs of adhesive or flooring degradation from moisture vapor transmission
